The family of Bertrum Winzer has asked the Patriot Guard Riders to stand in honor of his service to his country. PFC Winzer fought in the 1st Special Service Force, the famed Devil’s Brigade that paved the way for today’s Special Forces. When the force disbanded late in 1944, the private first class from Emmaus was reassigned to the 101st Airborne Division. Sent to Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, he was among the troops who held off the Germans at Bastogne.
Bert was a highly decorated veteran of WWII, Medals received included the Congressional Medal of Honor, Canadian Medal and French Legion of Honor, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, two Presidential Citations as well as numerous campaign medals and citations. He was known for frequent speaking engagements at many schools, historical societies, veteran organizations, and other events about his experiences in the service.
