The Patriot Guard Riders of Pennsylvania have been invited by the family and in coordination with the Patriot Guard Riders of Florida and the Patriot Guard Riders of West Virginia, to escort then stand in silent honor for Petty Officer First Class Stanislaw (Stanley) Frank Drwall.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that Petty Officer 1st Class Stanislaw Frank Drwall of the U.S. Navy at the age of 25 of Thomas, West Virginia was killed during World War II and was accounted for on 25th of March 2021.
On the 7th of December 1941, Stanislaw was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, his military occupation was a Patternmaker First Class. The USS Oklahoma was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Stanislaw.
From December 1941 to June 1944 Navy personnel recovered the remains of the deceased crew, which were subsequently interred in the Halawa and Nu’uanu Cemeteries. In September 1947 tasked with recovering and identifying Fallen U.S. personnel in the Pacific Theater, members of the American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) disinterred the remains of U.S. casualties from the two cemeteries and transferred them to the Central Identification Laboratory at Schofield Barracks. The laboratory staff was only able to confirm the identifications of 35 men from the USS Oklahoma at that time.
The AGRS subsequently buried the unidentified remains in 46 plots at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu. In October 1949, a military board classified those who could not be identified as non-recoverable, including Stanislaw. Between June and November 2015, DPAA personnel exhumed the USS Oklahoma unknowns from the Punchbowl for analysis.
To identify Stanislaw’s remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome DNAY-STR analysis.
Stanislaw’s name is recorded on the Courts of the Missing at the Punchbowl, along with the others who are missing from WWII and arosette will be placed next to his name to indicate Petty First Class Stanislaw Frank Drwall has been accounted for.
Decorations include the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal,Navy Expeditionary Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
Additional family service mention
Stanislaw’s younger brother Walter Casimir Drwall would go on to join the U.S. Navy and was killed in action during the sinking of the USS Coamo a year later on the 2nd of December 1942.
Stanislaw and his brother Walter are among the 8,455 American Gold Star casualties recorded in their archive with close ties to West Virginia. This is a substantial number of individuals who gave their lives in service to their country.
Stanislaw served our country with honor, it’s now our turn to honor him.
